Florida's Rules — Straight

Florida permits a veterinarian to establish the veterinarian-client-patient relationship over synchronous two-way video, so we can diagnose, treat and prescribe from a video visit. The prescription itself is limited: 14 days for most drugs, and it cannot be renewed without an in-person exam.

  • Video is required — audio-only calls, text, questionnaires and chatbots cannot establish the relationship.
  • Most prescriptions are capped at a 14-day supply; flea and tick control drugs may run up to one month.
  • A prescription based solely on a video visit must be renewed with an in-person examination.
  • Controlled substances and off-label prescribing require an in-person physical exam or a premises visit.
  • Telehealth cannot be used to issue certain certificates of veterinary inspection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions from Florida pet owners about online veterinary care

Yes, within limits Florida sets. Under the 2024 PETS Act, a veterinarian can establish the VCPR (veterinarian-client-patient relationship) over a live two-way video visit and prescribe. Florida caps those prescriptions at a 14-day supply for most drugs (up to one month for flea and tick control), and a prescription written from a video visit cannot be renewed without an in-person exam. Controlled substances and off-label prescribing require an in-person exam. Prescriptions we can write are sent to your preferred online pet pharmacy.
