For U.S. Diplomats & Foreign Service Families

Your pet's vet goes with you

The DipKit is a veterinary medication kit — properly prescribed for your specific pet after a full exam, then dispensed before you depart. When something comes up at post, a wuuf! video consultation directs you exactly how to use it. Licensed veterinarians based in Virginia & DC, the heart of the foreign service community.

Licensed in Virginia & DC
Proper exam before every prescription
FDA-approved medications only
No controlled substances
Properly labeled prescription packaging

Licensed in Virginia & Washington DC — the hub of U.S. foreign service

Dr. Lapera is licensed in both Virginia and DC, the same jurisdiction where the State Department, Foreign Service Institute (Arlington), and most diplomatic agencies are headquartered. Virginia and DC law permit full telehealth VCPR — meaning your initial exam, prescription, and all ongoing consultations can happen entirely by video.

Quality vet care disappears at many posts

Thousands of pets accompany diplomatic families to overseas assignments each year. At many postings, the situation is grim.

No FDA medications

Many countries lack access to standard FDA-approved veterinary drugs. Counterfeit or degraded products are common.

Language barriers

Local vets may not speak English. Medical terminology doesn't translate. Misdiagnosis risks are high.

Months-long shipping

Shipping medications internationally can take weeks or months. APO mail is unreliable at many posts.

No continuity of care

2–3 year rotations mean constant changes in vets. No single doctor knows your pet's history.

Remote hardship posts

Some postings have no local veterinarian within hours of driving. Emergencies become crises.

Uncertain drug costs

Where medications are available, prices and quality are unpredictable. Local pricing may be exorbitant.

How DipKit works

A four-step process from your Virginia exam to a video consult in Nairobi.

01

Full veterinary exam first

Before anything is prescribed, Dr. Lapera conducts a complete exam of your pet — by video or in person — and establishes a VCPR (veterinarian-client-patient relationship) under Virginia and DC law. She reviews health history, weight, species, breed, and any known conditions or allergies. Nothing is dispensed without this exam. Note: this VCPR consultation does not constitute or substitute for an international travel health certificate, which requires a separate in-person exam by a USDA-accredited veterinarian. We are happy to provide referrals.

02

Prescription dispensed before departure

Based on the exam, Dr. Lapera prescribes medications appropriate for your specific pet. Those medications are dispensed — properly labeled with prescription documentation — for you to take to post. Each medication arrives in its original labeled container with your pet's name, dosing information, and the prescribing vet's details.

03

Book a consult when something comes up

Your pet develops an ear infection in Kampala. You open wuuf!, book a same-day video consultation, and connect with Dr. Lapera. She examines your pet live on video, diagnoses the issue, and tells you exactly which medication to use, the dose, and for how long. We offer extended hours to accommodate overseas time zones — all you need is a decent internet connection.

04

Reorder when you're running low

Your app tracks remaining quantities and expiration dates. When it's time for a refill, request one through the app. Refill kits ship via APO/diplomatic mail or can be picked up during home leave. The VCPR is maintained through regular wuuf! check-ins.

Vet-directed use — always

The kit does not replace veterinary judgment. Every time a medication is used, it follows a live wuuf! video consultation in which the veterinarian evaluates your pet, makes a diagnosis, and directs the specific medication, dose, and duration. Owners do not self-medicate from the kit — this is vet-directed care at every step, which is what keeps the model legally sound and medically safe.

What's in the kit

Covering the most common non-emergency conditions your pet is likely to face at post. All FDA-approved. All properly labeled. No controlled substances.

Kit contents are tailored to each pet by the prescribing veterinarian based on species, weight, breed, and health history. Medications listed below are representative examples — your kit may differ based on your pet's specific exam. Pets with pre-existing conditions or requiring specialized medications may see adjusted kit pricing, confirmed before finalizing. Additional medications can be added to any kit based on your pet's needs.

Posted somewhere with great vet care?

Headed to Western Europe, Japan, Australia, or another country with reliable veterinary services? You may not need DipKit. Our standard wuuf! telemedicine plans give you a US vet on call without the medication kit.

Who DipKit is for

Built around the diplomatic community, open to all Americans serving overseas.

🏛️

State Department FSOs and family members at embassies and consulates worldwide.

⚔️

Pet health by region

Every posting has different risks for your pet. Your DipKit regional supplement is tailored to where you're headed — here's what to know.

Included with Standard and Complete tiers. Essentials tier receives the regional info card.

🌴

Tropical / Southeast Asia

Jakarta, Bangkok, Manila, Phnom Penh, Hanoi

Parasites are the #1 concern

Regular deworming is commonly recommended at tropical posts — your wuuf! vet will set the right schedule based on your pet and location. Hookworm, roundworm, and giardia are extremely common. DipKit Complete includes a 6-month supply of dewormer for tropical postings.

Ringworm and fungal infections

High humidity creates ideal conditions for fungal infections. Ringworm is extremely common and can spread to humans. Watch for circular patches of hair loss, scaly skin, or excessive scratching. Your kit includes antifungal treatment for early intervention.

Tick-borne diseases

Ehrlichiosis and babesiosis are prevalent. Use tick prevention year-round (not just seasonally). Check your pet daily — especially ears, neck, and between toes. Your kit includes a tick remover tool.

Medication storage

Heat and humidity can degrade medications. Store your kit in a cool, dry place — ideally air-conditioned. Keep liquid medications in the refrigerator if directed.

DipKit supplement includes: Extended deworming protocol, fungal prevention guide, tick management card, humidity storage tips

🌍

Sub-Saharan Africa

Nairobi, Accra, Kampala, Dakar, Dar es Salaam

Snake encounters

Depending on your post, venomous snakes can be a real risk — especially in compounds with gardens. Know your post's common species. If your pet is bitten: keep them calm, minimize movement, note the snake's appearance if safe to do so, and seek veterinary care immediately. Your DipKit includes a snake bite first response card with post-specific guidance.

Tick-borne disease (high prevalence)

Tick-borne diseases like ehrlichiosis and babesiosis are extremely common in dogs. Tick prevention is non-negotiable — use veterinary-grade preventives year-round. Your kit includes a tick remover and your wuuf! vet can prescribe appropriate prevention before departure.

Deworming and parasites

Regular deworming is essential. Intestinal parasites are widespread and can be picked up from soil, water, or contact with other animals. Complete tier includes dewormer supply.

Limited emergency vet access

Many posts have no reliable emergency vet. Know the closest option before you need it. Your regional card includes emergency contacts and nearest vetted (no pun intended) veterinary facilities.

DipKit supplement includes: Snake bite first response card, tick-borne disease guide, deworming protocol, emergency vet locator for your post

🏜️

Middle East / Central Asia

Amman, Ankara, Dushanbe, Tbilisi, Ashgabat

Heat exposure and heatstroke

Summer temperatures can exceed 120°F in some postings. Heatstroke can be fatal within minutes. Never leave pets in vehicles, limit outdoor time during peak heat (10am–4pm), and always have fresh water available. Know the signs: excessive panting, drooling, bright red or pale gums, vomiting, collapse. Cool your pet immediately with room-temperature water (not ice).

Sand flies and leishmaniasis

Leishmaniasis is transmitted by sand flies and is endemic in many Middle Eastern and Central Asian countries. Dogs are particularly susceptible. Symptoms can take months to appear. Discuss preventive options with your wuuf! vet before departure.

Water quality

Tap water at some posts contains parasites or bacteria that can cause GI issues in pets. Use filtered or bottled water for drinking. Watch for sudden-onset diarrhea or vomiting after arrival — GI medications in your kit cover this.

DipKit supplement includes: Heat safety protocol, sand fly/leishmaniasis awareness card, water quality guidance, climate-specific storage tips

🌎

Latin America / Caribbean

Bogota, Lima, Mexico City, Santo Domingo, Brasilia

Altitude sickness (high-altitude posts)

Bogota (8,660 ft), Quito (9,350 ft), La Paz (11,975 ft) — pets can experience altitude sickness just like humans. Symptoms include lethargy, loss of appetite, and rapid breathing. Allow a gradual adjustment period. Brachycephalic breeds (pugs, bulldogs, Persians) are at higher risk.

Tropical parasites (coastal and lowland posts)

Posts in tropical lowlands share many of the same parasite risks as Southeast Asia — hookworm, heartworm, and tick-borne diseases are common. Year-round prevention is recommended.

Street animal interactions

Stray dog and cat populations are large in many Latin American cities. Keep your pet leashed and avoid direct contact with strays — risk of fights, disease transmission, and parasites. Ensure rabies vaccination is current before departure.

DipKit supplement includes: Altitude adjustment guide (where applicable), parasite prevention protocol, stray animal safety card

Common questions

On the legality, logistics, and how it actually works at post.

It follows the same process as any veterinary prescription. Before you leave, Dr. Lapera conducts a full exam of your pet — by video or in person — and establishes a VCPR (veterinarian-client-patient relationship) under Virginia and DC law. Based on that exam, she prescribes medications appropriate for your specific pet: their species, weight, breed, health history, and known conditions. Those medications are dispensed properly labeled with prescription documentation — the same as any prescription you'd pick up at a pharmacy, just packaged together before your departure. Each time something comes up at post, you book a wuuf! video consultation first. The vet evaluates your pet live, makes a diagnosis, and directs exactly which medication to use and at what dose. Standard veterinary practice throughout: a proper exam, a proper prescription, and vet-directed use every time.
